专业概况

在这里学什么？

Graduate students study with master teachers who are renowned jazz and commercial music performers through applied music study in saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, drumset and voice (other instruments will be considered on a case-by-case basis). Students perform in large, small, and studio ensembles that rank among the finest in the country by virtue of the quality of concerts, recordings, broadcasts, tours, and repertoire.

Learning Outcomes for the M.M. in Performance - Jazz Emphasis Degree

The School of Music has a common body of knowledge and skills for all graduate degree areas. These fall broadly into the following categories: Professional Competence, Musicianship, Creativity, Scholarship, Pedagogy and Communication.

In addition to the core competencies on the Graduate Degrees page, Master of Music in Performance - Jazz Emphasis students must fulfill the following specific goals and outcomes:

• Students must demonstrate achievement of professional, advanced-level competence in the major area, including significant technical mastery, capability to produce work and solve professional problems independently, and a coherent set of artistic/intellectual goals that are evident in their jazz and commercial music work and performances.
• Students are expected to have the ability to form and defend value judgments about jazz and commercial music and to communicate musical ideas, concepts, and requirements to professionals and laypersons related to the practice in this field.
• Students must demonstrate advanced understanding of performance practice and historical and social contexts of the musical works of this field from various cultures and time periods.
• Students must demonstrate advanced competence in all areas relative to jazz and commercial music. These elements include: performance, improvisation, pedagogy, composition, arranging, history, sight-reading, studio musicianship, and related technologies.
• Students will demonstrate research, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills throughout in applied study, ensembles, and academic coursework.

Credits

A minimum of thirty (30) credit hours will be required in the Master of Music in Performance - Jazz Emphasis program. The thirty credits include ten (10) credits of a Music Core, with other courses divided between major-area requirements and electives.
