专业概况

BA/MD students pursue one of three degree options for their undergraduate degree, all of which emphasize science and liberal arts coursework. The curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation for practicing medicine with sensitivity to New Mexicans and their public health and medical needs. Health, Medicine, and Human Values (HMHV) is the BA/MD major offered exclusively to BA/MD students, but students may opt to complete any A&S major. The selected curriculum must be within the following BA/MD options:

Option I: A&S Major Option II: HMHV Major-HHS Concentration Option III: HMHV Major-BMS Concentration

Included in the customized curriculum for all students, will be the BA/MD Pre-Medical Core (45-61 hours total), five integrated HMHV seminars (3 credit hours each), three HMHV workshops (1-2 credit hours each) and participation in a HMHV summer community health practica (6 credit hours) in a New Mexico rural or medically-underserved community. All required courses must be successfully completed with a standard letter grade of a C or better.

The degree is designed to help address the state’s physician shortage by assembling a class of diverse students who are committed to serving New Mexico communities. This partnership program, between the UNM College of Arts & Sciences and the UNM School of Medicine, is open to New Mexico high school seniors planning to begin college in the fall semester after their high school graduation.

This program is open to high school students graduating from a New Mexico high school as well as members of an Indian nation, tribe or pueblo located wholly or partially in NM, and graduating from a local school.

Students will first earn a baccalaureate degree through the College of Arts & Sciences in a challenging four-year curriculum specifically designed to prepare them for medical school and, ultimately, to practice medicine in New Mexico.

Upon successfully completing the undergraduate academic and eligibility requirements of the program, students will then transition to the School of Medicine to complete their doctor of medicine degree.

为来自中国的学生设计 Secondary Education: Completion of the equivalent of an American upper secondary school education (approximately twelve years of formal education beginning at age six) and have the appropriate diplomas or satisfactory results on leaving examinations (if completed). Academic Preparation: Strong academic preparation or a U.S. equivalent grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (for freshman applicants) or 2.0 on a 4.0 scale (for transfer students with the equivalent of 24 college credit hours). TOEFL (internet-based) 68, TOEFL (paper-based) 520, IELTS 6.0, Pearson Test of English 47.
