Why study Law BA at UB?

The changing market for legal services has led to a proliferation of new law-related career possibilities. For example, compliance specialists work in corporations of all kinds to ensure that organizations comply with the laws of intellectual property and privacy, and human resources managers need to understand employment law and benefits rules. The Law BA is intended to respond to this changing market by preparing students for careers that do not require a licensed attorney, but where a sound understanding of the law is valuable.

At the same time, the practice of law continues to become more and more complex. Whole new careers have developed to support the work lawyers do; many of these careers do not require that one be a licensed lawyer, but do call for some understanding of law along with other specialized or technical skills. E-discovery and litigation support professionals apply technical expertise to manage the massive volume of electronically stored evidence required in all kinds of litigation. Trial and jury consultants combine such technical expertise with a practical knowledge of psychology and sociology to help lawyers communicate complex concepts to juries.

Learning Outcomes

• Recognizing different conceptions of justice and of the social functions of law, and how to apply them in resolving disputes.
• Describe the structure and operation of the United States legal system, and its relationship to social and economic institutions.
• Recognize, define and explain fundamental concepts in public and private law.
• Conduct legal research to locate and assess both primary and secondary legal sources.
• Read, understand and interpret legal texts.
• Engage in legal reasoning, drawing on legal authority, doctrine and evidence.
• Communicate analysis and argument to diverse audiences, both in writing and orally.
• Recognize and be prepared to address cultural diversity in legal and policy settings.

Career Outlook

The career objectives of the Law BA are to prepare students to work in a job or profession that involves some exposure to the law, including government, law enforcement, business contracting and negotiations, non-profits and social services, financial compliance, and intellectual property.

为来自中国的学生设计 Admission to UB’s freshman class is selective and is based in part on the quality of your secondary school academic record and the number of spaces available in the class. You should feel confident applying to UB if you have an above-average academic record and have taken challenging courses in high school to help prepare you to be successful at university. UB uses a 4.0 grading scale and we expect students applying here to have the equivalent of a 3.0 on that scale. That is the same as a grade of B or 83 on a 100-point scale. English Language Scores: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 70, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 523, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.0, the minimum score of PTE is 50, CAEL 70, CanTEST 4.5, Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) score 185; Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) score 185, IB Higher Level English a Literature 4, IB Higher Level English a Language and Literature 4.
