Why study Material Science and Engineering BS at UB?

The Department of Materials Design and Innovation (MDI) provides students with a data intensive perspective of materials science and engineering including the study of materials theory, characterization, synthesis, processing, and data science and simulation techniques. Topics in materials science are integrated with a strong program in the use of advanced information science tools including but not limited to topics such as data mining, machine learning, statistics and scientific visualization. In this manner, students learn core concepts of classical materials science education as well as acquire a foundation in informatics, integrating experimental and computational methods in materials science and materials engineering. Students will be exposed to an innovative program in which data intensive research support the translation of fundamental materials science and engineering into the fields of materials discovery, manufacturing, and engineering systems.

The curriculum is designed to meet several program educational objectives. We expect our graduates to achieve the following skills and capabilities within a short time after graduation:

  • Demonstrate professional competence, broadly defined, by assuming a role of increasing importance within an organization or business, or making progress towards an advanced degree.
  • Apply scientific and engineering principles to solve technical problems, using a wide range of skills including experimental and informatics techniques.
  • Be able to express oneself in writing and orally.
  • Interact well with a broad range of people, especially on teams. Relate well with superiors, peers, and subordinates.
Learning Outcomes

Specific student educational outcomes, to be achieved by the time of graduation, include:

  • an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  • an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  • an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  • an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  • an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  • an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  • an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Career Outlook

Materials science and engineering is an exciting and unique profession since it impacts almost all aspects of our society. Graduates of MDI will leave UB prepared to work in a wide range of technologies, including microelectronics, aerospace, biotechnology, energy, data analytics and software sectors of the economy. The interdisciplinary training for students will prepare students for a wide array of professional opportunities including careers in research, teaching, business entrepreneurship and public policy.

为来自中国的学生设计 Admission to UB’s freshman class is selective and is based in part on the quality of your secondary school academic record and the number of spaces available in the class. You should feel confident applying to UB if you have an above-average academic record and have taken challenging courses in high school to help prepare you to be successful at university. UB uses a 4.0 grading scale and we expect students applying here to have the equivalent of a 3.0 on that scale. That is the same as a grade of B or 83 on a 100-point scale. English Language Scores: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 70, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 523, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.0, the minimum score of PTE is 50, CAEL 70, CanTEST 4.5, Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) score 185; Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) score 185, IB Higher Level English a Literature 4, IB Higher Level English a Language and Literature 4.
