This programme will give you a comprehensive grounding in the theory and practice of phonetics.

Research

In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), Linguistics research at Edinburgh is ranked 1st in Scotland and 2nd in the UK (Times Higher Education, Modern Languages and Linguistics, Rank order by GPA).

Key aims and skills

The programme has a strong practical emphasis. It is designed primarily for graduates wishing to continue studying phonetics at PhD level, and for those wishing to use phonetics as a tool for investigation in related fields, including historical linguistics, phonology, developmental linguistics, psychology and speech technology.

Career opportunities

This course is primarily as a conversion course if you are looking to do serious postgraduate work in: phonetics; speech pathology; speech processing; forensic linguistics; related fields.

You will also receive training in practical skills, for example statistics and computational techniques, which could be relevant for a variety of different fields.

为来自中国的学生设计 You should have a good first degree from a recognised institution, with minimum grades of between 80-85%. This is the University’s general minimum requirement but some programmes may have specific qualification requirements as well. Entry requirements vary from course to course and in cases there is also variation in the standards required for entry to certain courses. Courses in great demand are likely to require higher entry grades. Please refer the university website for details of the English Language requirements for entry to individual postgraduate degree programmes.
