The Department of Computer Science of the University of New Mexico has offered the Master of Science in Computer Science degree since 1973. The purpose of the master’s degree program is to prepare students to work as professionals in the computer science field. Two options are available to interested students, the thesis option (Plan I) and the course option (Plan II).
The three outcomes for the M.S. program are:
CS Fundamentals: Exhibit knowledge of engineering and science fundamentals appropriate for the discipline and/or specialization. Communication: Be able to communicate effectively. Critical Assessment: Demonstrate the ability to critically assess information in the discipline and/or specialization. MS Core Requirements
The Master of Science in Computer Science (M.S.) can be completed under Plan I or Plan III. The UNM requirements for the degree are listed in the UNM Catalog and augmented by specific departmental requirements as summarized below:
Plan I
32 credit hours of approved graduate courses. At least 2 credit hours of CS 592 (Colloquium), taken at UNM. At least 26 of the 32 credit hours must be in courses offered by the Computer Science department at the 500-level or above. Completion of a minimum of two courses from each category below with a grade of B- or better: - a. Mathematical Methods – CS 500, 530, 550, 558, 561.
- b. Empirical Methods – CS 512, 522, 523, 527, 529, 547.
- c. Engineering/System Building Methods – CS 442, 554, 564, 580, 585, 587.
Completion of 6 to 9 credit hours of Thesis (599) credit, with a maximum of 9 credit hours of thesis and independent research, combined. Defense of the Thesis. Plan III
32 credit hours of approved graduate courses. At least 2 credit hours of CS 592 (Colloquium), taken at UNM. In addition to Colloquium, at least 24 of the 32 credit hours must be in courses offered by the Computer Science Department at the 500-level or above.
No final examination is required. Career Opportunities:
With a degree in Computer Science from UNM, students are ready to:
- Protect computational systems from malicious acts
- Scale up computational systems to solve large societal challenges
- Develop new ways to visualize and interact with data
