Why study Biological Sciences BA/Biology Adolescence Education EdM at UB?

The Biology education program is an accelerated, combined degree program that leads to a Biological Sciences BA and Biology Education EdM in five years.

The Department of Biological Sciences is a center for innovative, interdisciplinary life sciences research and teaching. Our faculty research interests span molecules to ecosystems. This cross-disciplinary approach to life sciences enables new discoveries that impact every major field of biology. The coursework in the first three years provides a deep understanding of the Biological Sciences. Select education courses give students opportunity to experience the nuances of the profession.

The graduate portion of the program will continue to build understanding of science and provide needed skills to become an effective teacher. The final year residency allows students to co-teach alongside an expert teacher to experience the inner workings of the classroom.

At the end of the five-year program, successful students will receive recommendation for New York State Initial and Professional Teacher Certification. You will join a dynamic community of science education teachers and researchers that engage and question 21st century critical issues in science education.

Learning Outcomes

Students in the combined program will complete the learning outcomes of the Biological Sciences BA. In addition, graduates of the Biology Education EdM program will:

• Demonstrate subject specific content expertise that supports effective teaching in the field.
• Create inclusive learning environments to meet individual differences in a caring, culturally responsive, and professional manner.
• Construct relevant and rigorous curricula that include critical assessment of student learning outcomes.
• Design, develop, and evaluate learning experiences that maximize the use of digital and interactive technologies.
• Promote the application of research and evidence-based practices in diverse settings throughout their teaching careers.
• Remain intellectually curious, continually updating their knowledge and skills to ensure ongoing excellence in teaching.

Career Outlook

Employment opportunities exist as New York State and other states nationwide are facing current and future teacher shortages. Program graduates will be equipped to find professional employment as teachers or curriculum specialists in public, private, and charter schools in grades 5-12. Graduates also may find career opportunities as consultants or researchers in industry, government agencies, museums, or the non-profit sector.

为来自中国的学生设计 Admission to UB’s freshman class is selective and is based in part on the quality of your secondary school academic record and the number of spaces available in the class. You should feel confident applying to UB if you have an above-average academic record and have taken challenging courses in high school to help prepare you to be successful at university. UB uses a 4.0 grading scale and we expect students applying here to have the equivalent of a 3.0 on that scale. That is the same as a grade of B or 83 on a 100-point scale. English Language Scores: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 70, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 523, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.0, the minimum score of PTE is 50, CAEL 70, CanTEST 4.5, Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) score 185; Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) score 185, IB Higher Level English a Literature 4, IB Higher Level English a Language and Literature 4.
