Why study Sociology BA/MA - Applied Social Research at UB?

The BA/MA in Sociology with a formal Concentration in Applied Social Research provides students with extra training in research design and the advanced statistical and qualitative research methods used to analyze social issues. Students will understand and be able to apply sociological theories and research techniques to social issues, linking ideas with evidence in a combined undergraduate/graduate program that prepares students for a range of career options. The BA/MA in Applied Social Research is designed for students who want high-quality research and analytic skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of all requirements, the student will:

• Have in-depth familiarity with and understanding of the research methods used by sociologists, and will have the skills to conduct original data collection and analysis of primary and secondary data
• Understand foundational and advanced statistical methods and be able to apply statistical methods to the analysis of social issues
• Understand the role of theory in sociology. Students will be able to describe the significance of social theory to society, compare and contrast basic theoretical orientations, and apply sociological theories to social issues
• Have comprehension of the theory, methods, and content of one or more of the Department's core areas of Family and the Life Course, Law and Social Policy, Social Inequalities, Urban and Community, and/or Work and Organizations
• Have skills associated with presenting high quality social science research to diverse audiences

Career Outlook

As a broad social science, a degree in sociology provides students with the technical and analytic tools, critical thinking skills, and global perspective needed to navigate the 21st century successfully and succeed in many careers. The jobs current students apply for after graduation may not even exist yet. To keep up with a rapidly changing world, sociology students acquire the tools to critically analyze the world and their place within it. They also learn the practical skills they need to succeed. Graduates of the BA/MA program will apply their knowledge and skills across a wide variety of occupations and professions including medical and health services, recreation, business, law and law enforcement, urban planning, social policy, and social services. They are also prepared for further graduate study at the PhD level in areas such as sociology, public policy, social work, and other social sciences.

为来自中国的学生设计 Admission to UB’s freshman class is selective and is based in part on the quality of your secondary school academic record and the number of spaces available in the class. You should feel confident applying to UB if you have an above-average academic record and have taken challenging courses in high school to help prepare you to be successful at university. UB uses a 4.0 grading scale and we expect students applying here to have the equivalent of a 3.0 on that scale. That is the same as a grade of B or 83 on a 100-point scale. English Language Scores: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 70, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 523, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.0, the minimum score of PTE is 50, CAEL 70, CanTEST 4.5, Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) score 185; Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) score 185, IB Higher Level English a Literature 4, IB Higher Level English a Language and Literature 4.
