Why study Nuclear Medicine Technology BS at UB?

Nuclear medicine technology is a health-related profession concerned with use of radioactive materials for diagnostic, therapeutic, and research purposes. Nuclear medicine is one of the diagnostic imaging modalities. It is a highly technical profession with a lot of patient interaction. The nuclear medicine technologist works very closely with the nuclear medicine physician, radiologist or cardiologist. There is a demand for well-trained nuclear medicine technologists. Jobs are available in hospitals, outpatient imaging centers and offices and commercial equipment and radiopharmaceutical companies. The Nuclear Medicine Technology Program prepares students for entry-level positions as staff technologists. Each student receives a solid foundation in all routine nuclear medicine procedures. Graduates have a very high first time pass rate on the certification exams.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of all requirements, the student will have knowledge to:

  • Explain the physics, radiation biology, radiation safety & regulations, instrumentation, drugs, quality control procedures, clinical studies (diagnostic and therapeutic), and patient care and management related to the field of nuclear medicine
  • Perform all routine diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures and quality control procedures in a timely fashion with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrate patient care and management skills
  • Discuss and demonstrate good oral communication skills, professional behavior, interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and reasoning skills through a variety of activities such as journal article review, image artifact evaluation, class projects, case study analysis, problem analysis, etc.

Career Outlook

There are employment opportunities in New York State and across the U.S. The majority of positions are in hospitals, physician's offices, and outpatient imaging centers. Many UB Program graduates have moved into supervisory positions relatively quickly. Nuclear medicine technologists can branch into health physics, medical physics, or work for commercial companies in sales, research, or education. Program graduates may also pursue graduate or professional degrees.

为来自中国的学生设计 Admission to UB’s freshman class is selective and is based in part on the quality of your secondary school academic record and the number of spaces available in the class. You should feel confident applying to UB if you have an above-average academic record and have taken challenging courses in high school to help prepare you to be successful at university. UB uses a 4.0 grading scale and we expect students applying here to have the equivalent of a 3.0 on that scale. That is the same as a grade of B or 83 on a 100-point scale. English Language Scores: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 70, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 523, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.0, the minimum score of PTE is 50, CAEL 70, CanTEST 4.5, Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) score 185; Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) score 185, IB Higher Level English a Literature 4, IB Higher Level English a Language and Literature 4.
