Overview

Commercial products today combine many technologies, and industry is increasingly interdisciplinary. This course meets this demand, giving you an interdisciplinary knowledge base in modern electronics including power, communications, control and embedded processors.

You’ll develop a broad grasp of many interlocking disciplines: core modules develop your practical lab skills and industry awareness, and a range of optional modules allow you to focus on your interests or career plans. You can study wireless communication systems, electric drives, generating electric power from renewable sources, FPGAs and system-on-chip, medical electronics and E-Health, C and Matlab programming. In labs you will use modern first-class equipment.

This course will appeal to people with a broad interest in electronics, or who will specialise in modern communications techniques, system-on-chip, control systems, power and drives or renewable energy.

Accreditation

Accreditation is the assurance that a university course meets the quality standards established by the profession for which it prepares its students. For electronics, these standards are set by the Insitution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

This MSc is accredited by the IET on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the Further Learning requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. An accredited degree like this will speed our application for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Learning and teaching

Our groundbreaking research feeds directly into teaching, and you’ll have regular contact with staff at the forefront of their disciplines. You’ll meet them in lectures, seminars, tutorials, small group work, project meetings, and socially.

Independent study is important, as you develop your problem-solving and research skills as well as your subject knowledge. The University has an excellent Library with online access to much front-rank material, including all IEEE Journals.

Assessment

You will be assessed by several techniques including case studies, technical reports, presentations, in-class tests, assignments and exams.

Career opportunities

Graduates of this course can expect to find jobs where industry needs a breadth of knowledge matched by a depth in certain areas.

You’ll be well equipped to integrate and co-ordinate the strands of a cross-disciplinary project and manage the interfaces between specialities. With these skills, you’ll be in a good position to progress to project management roles in companies working at the cutting edge of modern multi-faceted systems.

The University of Leeds uses institutional lists when assessing applications from accepted Chinese institutions, and requirements may vary by school. Please check the appropriate listings below before making an application. For courses require 1st class, students need to have Minimum of 80%. For courses require 2.1, students need to have Minimum of 75%. For courses require 2.2, students need to have Minimum of 70%. Minimum qualifications include: IELTS (International English Language Testing System) an overall band of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each component skill.
