The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Texas is committed to educating and creating well-rounded, knowledgeable biomedical engineers who are passionate about improving the quality of life for people in Texas, the United States and the world.

An increased emphasis on health care, innovative engineering and technological advances have contributed to a rising demand for biomedical engineers. The U.S. Department of Labor expects biomedical engineering to grow at an above average rate and become the fastest growing engineering field over the next decade. With a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from UNT, you’ll be prepared for an engineering career that solves societal problems, advances technology and improves the quality of life for people everywhere.

As a UNT biomedical engineering graduate student, you will have the opportunity to work with world-renowned faculty who are conducting innovative research in biomaterials, biomedical instrumentation, nano-technology and biomechanics.

Degree requirements

You’ll plan your degree with the assistance and approval of your major professor and advisory committee. Supplementary courses will be required for applicants with undergraduate degrees not in biomedical engineering. A grade point average of at least 3.0 is required to stay in the program.

Thesis option

• Minimum of 30 semester hours required beyond a bachelor’s degree
• 6 credit hours of BMEN (Biomedical Engineering) 5950 with a major professor (During the first 3 credit hours of BMEN 5950, you and your major professor define a thesis proposal and present the proposal to a faculty thesis committee for approval.)
• 6 credit hours of graduate BMEN core courses
• 9 credit hours of graduate BMEN courses
• 9 credit hours of electives approved by your faculty advisor
• Electives can be taken from biology, other engineering disciplines, computer science or management courses from the G. Brint Ryan College of Business

Non-thesis option

• Minimum of 33 semester hours required beyond a bachelor’s degree
• 6 credit hours of graduate BMEN core courses
• 18 credit hours of graduate BMEN courses
• 9 credit hours of electives (as stated in the thesis option) approved by your faculty advisor
