专业概况

在这里学什么？

The Department of Philosophy offers doctoral studies in most recognized subdisciplines and historical periods of philosophy. Our PhD program is designed to prepare students for teaching and for carrying out original research in the field.

The Department is distinguished by its unusually wide range of special interests and orientations in philosophy, and by the high degree of faculty-student interaction both in scholarly enterprises and in departmental affairs. We have nationally-recognized researchers in aesthetics, the history of philosophy, philosophy of language, and metaphysics.

Master's Program Requirements

Requirements for the MA degree are courses amounting to 30 hours of graduate credit including a Master's project under the supervision of a member of the philosophy faculty. Courses within the Department are normally counted on a three-hour-per-course basis. Courses may also be taken outside the Department with advance approval of the Director of Graduate Studies.

Although the MA degree is intended as a terminal degree for students admitted to the MA program, students who wish to continue may apply to the PhD program once the requirements for the MA have been fulfilled. Under certain circumstances, students in the PhD program may be required to write an MA thesis before continuing with the PhD work.

Most such degrees will be four or more years in length; UB recognizes some three-year degrees, but not all; A B-grade (GPA of 3.0) or higher from your bachelor's degree (or equivalent) courses. Grade point averages from non-U.S. universities will be evaluated by UB's Office of International Admissions. English Language Requirements: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 79, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 550, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.5, the minimum score of PTE is 55, the minimum score of Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) 185, the minimum score of Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) 185.
