The Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) is the world's first cancer research institute and a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Our Cancer Sciences graduate programs are in collaboration with the University at Buffalo. The internationally-recognized scientists and world-class facilities at RPCI provide an outstanding training environment. Because RPCI is a cancer research hospital students have a wide spectrum of choices for their research focus, from the basic investigation of cancer mechanisms to translational/clinical research with direct relevance to disease treatment.

The Cancer Sciences M.S. Degree Program is offered through the Roswell Park Graduate Division of the University at Buffalo (UB). This program is designed to give students a multidisciplinary research experience along with a broad-based academic background in cancer biology. This degree program is ideal preparation for students seeking to enter research careers or as preparation for subsequent Ph.D. training. While not designed specifically to facilitate subsequent entry into professional schools, a number of our M.S. graduates have found this training to improve their prospects for admission to medical and dental schools.

The program is structured to accommodate students seeking either laboratory-based research or prevention/epidemiology-focused research. Laboratory research topics include cell/molecular biology, genetics/genomics, biophysics, immunology and experimental therapeutics.

This degree requires only 30 credit hours; most students graduate after two years, though the degree can be completed in just a year-and-a-half if sufficient research results are obtained. For students interested in ultimately pursuing a Ph.D. in Cancer Sciences through RPCI, this program is the perfect gateway with the two programs sharing a significant number of transferrable course requirements. Since 2007, 14% of Roswell Park’s Ph.D. graduates have started in its Master’s program.

Most such degrees will be four or more years in length; UB recognizes some three-year degrees, but not all; A B-grade (GPA of 3.0) or higher from your bachelor's degree (or equivalent) courses. Grade point averages from non-U.S. universities will be evaluated by UB's Office of International Admissions. English Language Requirements: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 79, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 550, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.5, the minimum score of PTE is 55, the minimum score of Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) 185, the minimum score of Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) 185.
