DAY 1

Have you ever seen the magic capital of Shanghai at four in the morning? This is a question often asked by today’s young people. As a student at SFLS Affiliated to Shanghai Normal University, we ask you the question…have you ever seen the campus at 4 am? In the early Christmas morning, the students and teachers in the Cambridge Department of our international high school packed their bags and in the dark, they excitedly made their way from the warm dormitory to the school gate. There they received their breakfasts carefully prepared for them by the school. Then, they boarded the bus to the airport.

“We finally arrived at Pudong International Airport as a tinge of orange appeared in the early morning sky. After our arrival in Japan, we then ended the day on a happy note as we enjoyed our first dinner in Japan.”

DAY 2

Early the next morning, teachers and students made the journey to Tokyo University, Japan's highest institution of learning. At the entrance of the university, a student from Tokyo University eagerly waited for our arrival. She explained to us the scholarship system for entrance to Tokyo University and guided us through the university’s main buildings.

At noon, we went to Ginza district for lunch where we experienced true Japanese food culture. Teachers and students sat around on tatami mats, savoring the delicacy of “shouxiguo” and enjoying a traditional geisha performance. Geisha is a famous Japanese performing art profession which originated in Tokyo and Osaka in the 17th century. After the satisfying meal, we went to visit the Senso-ji Temple located in Asakusa, an eastern area in metropolitan Tokyo. Once there, we decided to consult the oracle and request divine answers to our questions, just as the local people do. Senso-ji temple has been used for centuries as an “Edo” place where entertainment is found and numerous festivals are held and it is the oldest temple in Tokyo. The majestic gate of the temple is officially known as "Thunder Gate”, and stands as a symbol of Japan and Asakusa.

At night, we went to the most expensive, elegant and luxurious street in Japan; Ginza, which together with the Champs Elysees in Paris and Fifth Avenue in New York, is one of the world's three most famous streets. Experience the pleasure of duty-free shopping! Needless to say, the teachers and students had a good night here.

DAY 3

Everything about the future is still unknown. As young people we were privileged to find out more about it at The National Museum of Emerging Sciences and Innovation, adjacent to the Imperial Palace in the heart of Tokyo. Inside is the landmark exhibit "Geo- Cosmos", designed and produced at the request of Mr. Mao Liwei, a famous Japanese astronaut, scientist and the current director of the museum, with the desire "to share the beautiful earth seen from the universe with more people". This is the world’s first large-scale spherical OLED- a sphere display with about 1 million LED’s embedded on its surface. According to satellite data, it can simulate the shape of the earth, moon and various planets. It can also display all kinds of earth science data streaming from all over the world, like the global sea surface temperature and global warming simulation experiments.

In the afternoon, all the teachers and students drove to visit CreCla, the largest manufacturer of bottled mineral water in Japan. We learned about the purification and filtration of bottled water and Japan's emphasis on resource recycling. We really came to appreciate the sophistication and business acumen of the Japanese.

DAY 4

Today is a day filled with science and technology!

We visited Tsukuba Space Center, the headquarters for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, a research and development organization located in Ibaraki Prefecture. If you are an aviation fan, don’t miss a visit to this place. You can tour the facility, visit the exhibition hall, walk through the space station test plant and other fascinating places. The cutting-edge aerospace development technology will definitely awe you. The exhibition hall features vehicles like the H-11 Transfer Vehicle and a full-size mock-up of the KIBO module, currently in use on the International Space Station. We took a multitude of photos, saw the astronauts clothing and the new concept lunar rover. Finally, we took a group photo as a memory of this special time together.

Lastly, we visited the Japanese AI robotics and technology enterprise, Cyberdyne. This enterprise is most noted for the HAL robotic exoskeleton suit which has given hope to many patients with muscular or cerebral injuries or disorders. I sincerely admire the development of science and technology in Japan. This kind of robot can help many patients in need of rehabilitation. It's wonderful!

DAY 5

The journey has come to an end. “Thank you to all the hardworking teachers and thank you to the school for giving us the opportunity to experience Japanese culture. This kind of real-world experience also makes us feel the importance of having a sense of responsibility and a team spirit.”

People often say that there is always one body and one soul on the road of life and this field trip caused us to return home with a full load. The trip came to a successful conclusion, but our steps of learning will continue to walk on the road... we’ll see you again at the Second Foreign Language School Affiliated to Shanghai Normal University”
