专业概况

在这里学什么？

Master of Science program offers three tracks that include the Thesis option, the Project option, and the Qualifying Exam option. An M.S. recipient is expected to acquire:

• A strong grasp of the core physics principles in classical mechanics, electrodynamics, statistical mechanics, and quantum mechanics
• Broad knowledge of contemporary physics development
• Strong oral and written communication skills.

The Thesis option emphasizes research experience, the Qualifying Exam option is course-based, and the Project option is a balance of course work and research. A minimum of 30 credit hours of formal graduate course work and thesis research is required for a M.S. degree. The student's overall GPA must be a minimum of 3.0 (equivalent to a grade of "B") for all courses leading to the degree.

Thesis Option

At least 18 credit hours of the student's complete program is to be devoted to formal graduate course work. Up to 12 credit hours of informal credits such as independent study, supervised teaching, or directed research (PHY 598, PHY 599, and PHY 600) to aid in the production of a final publication-ready thesis. For the Thesis Option the student must pass a public oral defense of the thesis.

Project Option

The Project Option consists of 24 hours of formal course work and 6 credit hours of PHY 600, which would terminate in a report approved by the student's research supervisor and one other graduate faculty member.

Qualifying Exam Option

A minimum of 30 credit hours of formal graduate course work is required. The student must pass the Qualifying Exam at the M.S. level within 18 months of his/her initial registration.

Most such degrees will be four or more years in length; UB recognizes some three-year degrees, but not all; A B-grade (GPA of 3.0) or higher from your bachelor's degree (or equivalent) courses. Grade point averages from non-U.S. universities will be evaluated by UB's Office of International Admissions. English Language Requirements: The minimum score of TOEFL IBT is 79, the minimum score TOEFL PBT is 550, the minimum score of IELTS is 6.5, the minimum score of PTE is 55, the minimum score of Cambridge English Proficiency (CPE) 185, the minimum score of Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) 185.
