The second stop was the Shanghai Botanical Gardens, which is very quiet in the winter. As the students entered the huge greenhouse, they were filled with a sense that spring was in the air. Their senses were overpowered by the amazing variety of flowers, grasses and countless trees. There was the beautiful cyclamen, bright red poinsettia, the stunning slipper orchid and tall trees such as the coconut tree. The most impressive was the cactus greenhouse. The students felt as if they were in the warm desert and the cold winter air outside seemed to fade away…
The third stop on their research journey was the Sanmin Cultural Village in Jiangnan. In January 2012, it received a Guinness World record for their Chinese Dragon, as “The most shapes composed of carved wooden boards.” It is a total of 5000 pieces of wood carved boards, filled with symbols of the Chinese nation’s rich 5000-year old civilization.
