The theme of this month's flag-raising ceremony is "caring". On today’s ceremony, Brenda Wan who is from Grade 11 Class 5 used this theme as the basis of her speech and helped us all think more carefully about caring.

Brenda began by introducing what caring is; doing a good deed for someone, which is the right thing to do. This good deed can be devotion, friendship, being genuine, loving or even just kind.

She went on to mention about a standout experience in her own life that epitomizes caring. She had accidently burnt her feet with hot water. Her mother quickly put her feet in cold water, and then did a very strange thing. She put on her coat and went out. Her initial thought was that her crying was so loud that her mother had been unable to bear it. 5 minutes later, however, her mother returned with medicine to put on her feet, which eased the pain. The caring continued, as Brenda was unable to walk, so her mother helped her shower and dress. After returning to school, once her classmates discovered what had happened, they were also so helpful. Brenda was able to experience care throughout the whole unfortunate experience.

She took the discussion further, by pointing out that true care will inevitably result in some action. However, all positive actions have caring as their primary motivation. Caring is essentially the glue that holds all our relationships together, from families through communities to whole societies. Caring enables us to forge bonds and to sustain them, and also to fully understand each other. In an often confusing world, care is one of the few things in which we can find meaning and comfort.

In conclusion, Brenda mentioned that caring changes shape according to the need. Caring is what drives our actions, pushes us to accomplish greater things, and is the foundation for our social interactions. Quoting Friedrich Von Hugel who, on his deathbed said: “Caring is the greatest thing; caring matters most”, she mentioned that these were truly important words, for without care, we do not really have anything at all.
